Exercise at any age can help you lead a healthier and happier life. Regular physical activity can lower the risk of developing chronic conditions, such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Also being physically active can boost mood, self-esteem and sleep quality, as well as reducing your risk of stress and depression.
To stay healthy or improve health, adults need to do 2 types of physical activity each week: aerobic and strength exercises.
The NHS recommends the following amount of activity for your age group:
- early childhood (under 5 years old)
- young people (5 to 18 years old)
- adults (19 to 64 years old)
- older adults (65 and over)
All adults should also break up long periods of sitting with light activity.
